Another New Year

Happy New Year, friends! I realize that it is already the 9th of January, but seeing as this is my first post of 2017 I thought I would share a couple of my goals for the year. Here’s the truth, I’ve never been very good at New Year’s resolutions. I usually make the typical ones; you know like lose weight, save money and those kinds of things. Like so many people, I stick to them for a few weeks and then totally fall off the wagon. Before I know it, the year is over and I’m left reflecting on all of the things I didn’t accomplish. It’s sad really……to see another year pass and still not be the person I want to be, the person I know I could be if I really actually tried. I know that God has a plan for my life and that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, but I also know that He has given me talents and gifts to hopefully make some sort of difference in this one life we get. I am the only one who can control the choices that I make everyday, the only one who can do the work necessary to achieve my dreams. After that it’s in God’s hands, but I don’t want to sit on the sidelines anymore looking at other peoples lives and watching them work towards their dreams. So I decided that this year was going to be different and I’ve started using Lara Casey’s PowerSheets (which are sadly sold out, but you can still find a ton of helpful information here). PowerSheets help you uncover purpose-filled goals and plan action steps to make what matters happen. It’s just about taking intentional little by little steps everyday towards making your goals happen. The idea is that those little steps add up to big change! In the past when I have gotten off track with my goals I would just say forget it and throw them out the window, but this way of goal setting is filled with so much grace. If you fail, you just hit the reset button and try again. Eventually you will look back and see how far you’ve come.

On to a couple of goals that I have uncovered through this process……I have to be honest, I’m a little nervous to share these. These are things that I would usually just talk with my family or really close friends about, but I wanted to share them to hopefully encourage you to work towards big dreams too. Also, if I put them out there it gives me some accountability to do the work necessary to achieve these dreams.

1). To be in the best shape I’ve ever been in by the time I’m Forty – I know, I know, you must be thinking, “Forty! That’s years and years away!” ;). No friends, it’s time for me to admit my age on here and forty is just two short years away. I turned thirty-eight in December and getting older has been harder for me than I ever thought it would be (that’s something else I’m working on and a conversation for another time). I know that this sounds like any other fitness goal that you make at the beginning of every year, but this time my “why” is different. This isn’t just about losing weight (though I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t part of it), it’s more about wanting to be strong and healthy. Heart problems run in my family and the older I get, the more I start to think about prevention and strengthening my heart. Two years might seem like a long time, but I want my progress to be slow and steady and something that will actually stick. When I get to forty I truly want my age to just be a number and to feel younger and stronger than I’ve ever felt before. Now here’s the embarrassing truth, it’s January 9th and today is the first day that I have worked out this year! Remember what I said about grace and little by little steps? ;) I’ll get there.

2). I want to own my own clothing boutique  – This one is BIG and crazy! I really don’t have the first clue of how to make this happen, but it’s something God has put on my heart. My love of fashion is no secret and I want to be a source of encouragement and inspiration to other women. Owning a boutique would allow me to interact and create community with other women, while helping them to feel like their best and most confident selves through the outfits they wear. A cute outfit has always been able to transform my mood and help me feel like I can conquer the day and I want to help other women feel that same way. Believe me, I know that what we look like on the outside is not the most important thing, but it’s amazing how clothes can make you feel beautiful inside and out. What are my next steps? I’m not sure exactly, but this year is for researching and planning. Even though it probably won’t happen this year, I want to take the small intentional steps towards making it happen and see what kind of doors God might open. My hands are open, I’m going to do the work and then give it over to God. In the meantime I will continue to try an build an engaged online community through the blog and social media. My hope is to really get to know you and build real relationships so that we can encourage and lift each other up.

So there you have it, two of my biggest and loftiest goals for this year. I feel kind of naked and exposed, but I really wanted to be transparent and authentic. Maybe my vulnerability will help you have the courage to share your big dreams with someone you trust and take the steps toward making them happen. Even if it’s just admitting them to yourself, that’s a step in the right direction. We can do big, hard things if we just do the work (preaching to myself a little here too)! I would love to hear some of your goals for the new year. Let me know in the comments below or connect with me through email or social media. I would be honored to chat with you about your big dreams. Happy New Year! I think 2017 is going to be a good year. :)

Tamara

“There’s no place like home”…. When I came up with the title of this blog post, it had everything to do with the outfit and these adorable shoes that look exactly like Dorothy’s ruby slippers, but the more I thought about this iconic movie quote, the more I realized how much it rings true in my own life. We were just talking to some family friends the other day and one of my best friends mom was remembering how I never wanted to spend the night at their house, but I always wanted my friend to spend the night at my house. I laughed, but had to admit that not much has changed. I have always been a huge homebody and even when I was a teenager and all of my friends were going out on the weekends, nothing ever sounded better to me than staying at home curled up on the couch watching a movie. There were a few years in my early 20’s when I went out all the time, but that quickly fizzled out. I’m an odd mix of loving to be alone, yet I’m really good with people and can easily strike up a conversation with a stranger. My jobs have always been in customer service and have involved talking to people, whether on the phone or in person, most of the day. It really takes a lot out me though, because when I get home from work I am completely drained of energy even though I sit for most of the day. I heard someone say recently that being an introvert vs. an extrovert means that you draw energy by having alone time vs. drawing energy from being with others. It really has nothing to do with being shy or outgoing. I consider myself to be an outgoing person, but I definitely draw my energy from having alone time. I really, really love to be alone and I honestly never get bored. But if my husband is home for more than a day with nothing to do, he starts to go stir crazy and I just think it’s the weirdest thing ever. I can always think of something to do at home. I think that this is why I’ve always had such a small group of really close friends and have never been the girl with a large circle of friends, I just don’t have the energy or need for it. I am recharged by alone time or a one on one conversation with someone I really care about. It’s funny because now that I really think about it, I guess that’s why I’m so drawn to blogging. Blogging is very solitary most of the time and that’s one of the things that I love about it. I can style an outfit, edit pictures, and write a blog post alone in my house for hours and be as happy as a clam! There really is no place like home. :)

I normally try not to post more than seven or eight pictures of the same outfit, because it doesn’t really seem necessary. I mean, how many different angles, poses, and closeups do you really need before it just becomes overkill and starts to feel way too self indulgent? If I’m being honest, a lot of the time it’s hard to find even a few that I like, either I’m being way too self critical or the outfit is just not flattering. Does that ever happen to you? You think you have the cutest outfit ever and you look great in the mirror, but then you take a picture and it tells a whole different story! That happens to me more than I like to admit. Maybe I should invest in some better mirrors.

Well, I am so happy to say that was not the case with this adorable dress from the new online boutique, Apricity! It took me forever to write this post because I could not narrow down the photos to use. This dress is just too cute, so I decided to use them all! The bow alone deserves a dozen pictures! As I mentioned briefly in my last post, this beautiful boutique is owned by Eileen Chai, who was one of the co-founders of my beloved Fleet Collection. I am so happy that some of Fleet Collection will live on in this new reimagined, but still familiar feeling line. Apricity means the warmth of the sun on a winter day, isn’t that beautiful? As someone who lives in Michigan where the winters can be brutal, I know first hand what a lovely feeling that is….and that’s exactly how this dress makes me feel, lovely. I can’t wait to watch this little boutique grow and flourish. You better believe there will be a lot more Apricity dresses in my future!

It was only two weeks ago that I was gushing about one of my favorite brands, Fleet Collection, and then I got the saddest news delivered to my email inbox last Friday! Fleet Collection is going out of business!! What?!! I was so sad and wish I had known about them sooner. Even though they have been in business for the last four years, I have only known about them for a short time. I had plans to order many more pieces from them and just like that, they are gone. The blow was only slightly softened by the huge discount they are giving for their closing sale. They started to sell out of things very quickly and I’m so glad I got the email when I did, because I was able to snag three beautiful dresses. If you act quickly and check out their website there may still be a few things left. Owners Eileen Chai & Lisa Hsieh sent out a sweet thank you email to all of their customers explaining that they are closing Fleet Collection because they are both starting their own separate ventures. I am sad to see Fleet Collection close, but excited to see what they do next and wish them nothing but the best. I am especially excited for Eileen’s new clothing line, Apricity! It is still a vintage inspired line that looks a lot like everything I loved about Fleet Collection. I actually got my first Apricity dress in the mail today and let me tell you, IT’S AMAZING!! It is so beautifully made and fits like a glove. I am so excited to take photos in it this weekend to share with you all! I seriously love it so much and I highly encourage you to check out Apricity. So I guess it’s not all sad news….when one vintage inspired clothing shop closes, another one opens. ;) Goodbye, Fleet Collection, you will be greatly missed.

Tamara

A little Bit Boho

It never fails, at this time of year my style shifts slightly. I go from primarily wearing mid-century inspired clothes to a much more laid back boho vibe. I never completely say goodbye to my fit & flare dresses and midi skirts, I just start to make more room for flowy dresses and flower crowns. It must be the warmer weather and longer days that bring out my inner flower child. ;) The other day someone asked me how I would describe my style and at the time I really didn’t have an answer. While I obviously have certain styles I lean toward, I really don’t like to box myself in. I thought about it for a while though and finally came up with an answer that describes my style at this stage of my life…..Mid-century boho chic. I would say my style falls into this category at least 90% of the time. :)

Last week was super busy and I had some really exciting/happy things going on. I can’t wait to share some of them with you, but seeing as how this post was supposed to be up this morning, I’m going to keep it short and sweet today. I hope your week is off to a great start! :)

Sunny Days Ahead

Remember the gorgeous sunny weather I wrote about in my last blog post? Well it’s all a distant memory, and all I have to remember it by are these photos. We woke up to cold and dreary weather on Tuesday and it’s been downhill from there. It even snowed on Wednesday! I obviously keep forgetting that I live in Michigan and there is no guarantee of nice weather until at least June. Even then we get three, maybe four months of good weather and then it’s back to cold. I really should look into moving somewhere warm and tropical, I am so not built for this! Sorry to be such a downer, but isn’t it amazing how the weather directly effects your mood and energy level? All I want to do is lay around and watch Netflix in my pajamas. I’m in desperate need of some vitamin D, maybe I should look into getting one of those sun lamps. Anyone know if they work?

Yellow is one of my favorite colors and this sunny outfit helps lift my spirits a little. This adorable skirt is made by a brand I discovered a few months ago called Fleet Collection. All of their pieces are original designs made in Los Angeles and they are so beautifully crafted. I was really impressed with the quality, especially for the price, and it fits like a dream. If you love vintage inspired clothing as much as I do, then I highly suggest you check them out. You will not be disappointed.

Well I am definitely going to be praying that this weekend warms up and that the sun re-appears! What is the weather like where you are? I hope it’s lovely.

Truly,

Tamara

Pink Lady

Pink Lace Midi Skirt10

Pink Lace Midi Skirt12

There was a time in my life when I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing pink. When I was young I didn’t want anything to do with wearing girly colors, let alone wearing pink lace! My sister was always the super girly one who’s absolute favorite color is pink. My poor mom always wanted me to take ballet lessons, but I wanted nothing to do with it. The thought of jumping around in a pink leotard and tutu horrified me! All I ever wanted to do was ride horses and hang out at the barn where I took lessons. I had no problem cleaning out a horses stall, but no way was I going to go hang out with all of those girly girls standing on their toes. I never thought it at the time, but I guess I was somewhat of a tom boy…… My how the tables have turned! I’ve always loved fashion and the process of styling the perfect outfit, but my taste and style has drastically changed. I hate to admit it even now, but I guess I’ve become a girly girl. My closet is full of dresses and skirts in every color and texture you can think of. I can’t seem to get enough! It is still so crazy to me how much I’ve changed and continue to change as an adult. One thing I’ve learned though, is never say never. And you know what??? I wish I had taken those ballet lessons. Sorry, Mom!!

The weather in Michigan was absolutely gorgeous this past weekend! It was so nice to be outside and not have to wear a coat. I almost forgot what the warmth of the sun felt like after the brutal winter we had. As you can tell from these pictures, it was a bit windy (which doesn’t make for the best hair day), but I wasn’t complaining (not too much anyway, lol). Now if we could just get some leaves on the trees………..

Baby Blue Dear Creatures Dress6

Today I thought I would share some of what I have been up to and what I have learned during this past five months. Even though I wasn’t blogging I was still always thinking about it and trying to learn how to be better at it. That’s one of the reasons I knew it was something I was meant to be doing. One of the ways I knew that I needed to improve was with the photography on the blog. When I first started this blog last summer, I didn’t have a camera so I was using my iPhone for all of the photos and editing them in various apps. While there is nothing wrong with this, and I’m proud of myself for making the best of what I had, I still knew there was a lot of room for improvement. So this past Christmas I asked for a DSLR camera and was so excited when I got it……but I had no clue how to use it. I ended up investing a little time and money in a few online courses and boy am I glad I did! I learned so much. The internet is such an awesome tool and I am still so amazed at all the things that you can learn online. It’s almost like the need for schooling in some areas is becoming obsolete (ok, so maybe you can’t become a doctor online, but you get what I’m saying). Anyway, after doing some research, I ended up taking a DSLR Basics and a Photoshop For Bloggers course through one of my favorite blogs A Beautiful Mess. You can also take both courses together at a discounted rate. I had already taken their Blog Life course and loved it, so I knew these two courses would be great and I was not disappointed. I learned so much from these courses and if you are also new to the world of photography and DSLR cameras I highly recommend them! These girls have been writing a blog and producing beautiful photos and content for years, so I knew they would have a lot to teach. I especially love that their courses are geared toward bloggers and that you have access to them for life. Also, if you ever have any questions you can ask in the Q&A section that you have access to and they usually answer within a few days. These courses are very thorough, well taught, and most importantly easy to understand. I cannot say enough good things about them! I still have a lot to learn, but I feel like I’ve come a long way. One of the most pleasant surprises that has come out of all of this is that I have really developed a love for photography and cannot wait to learn more.

Since I decided to write about my photography journey I thought it was only fitting to style an outfit around this adorable camera necklace that I got from Jane.com! Isn’t it the cutest?! Much to my husbands dismay, I have been obsessed with Jane ever since a friend introduced me to it about a month ago. They sell so many cute things from various sellers at really great prices. Some of it is a little cheesy, but I have found some super cute things, especially jewelry. You just have to check it out daily, because the deals change everyday (you can see how this might cause a problem, lol). I styled it with this baby blue Dear Creatures dress that I had been in love with since last fall. I finally ordered it from Ruche when it was on sale and I love it just as much as I thought I would. I absolutely adore the pale blue color and the 60’s vibe it gives off! And can we talk about these Seychelles shoes that I recently ordered from Hello Holiday?! They are perfect in every way! In the past I have talked about how I really don’t wear heels because of my klutziness, but these are the exception. They are so beautifully made, comfortable, and easy to walk in. They also have that vintage look that I love so much! You are going to be sick of seeing me wear them so often! ;)

It is 73 degrees here in Michigan today and I could not be happier about it! Happy Friday and I hope you have a great weekend!!

Truly,

Tamara

Hello Again

Floral Midi Skirt1

Floral Midi Skirt4

Floral Midi Skirt2

Floral Midi Skirt3

Tulip Necklace

Hello, it’s been awhile! I’ve been thinking about how to write this post for a while now and I’ve been a little (ok, a lot) stumped. Should I just jump back into writing blog posts, like I haven’t been MIA for five months, or should I explain why I took the time off? Ultimately, I decided to do the latter. I named this blog Truly, Tamara because I wanted this to be a space where I could share my authentic self and hopefully encourage others to do the same. If I didn’t explain my absence I wouldn’t be living up to that.

Blogging is hard. I don’t mean the actual act of blogging (although that’s not super easy either), I mean the self inflicted pressure it put on me to be perfect (or at least appear perfect). Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I ever did appear perfect. In fact I know I was far from it, and that was the problem. I would constantly look at other blogs and Instagram feeds and I’m ashamed to say, would get caught up in the ugly comparison trap. I didn’t feel like I was ever going to live up to all of those other beautiful blogs I would read and it was really effecting me in a bad way. I was having a hard time being happy for other people’s success, because I was jealous of what they had and what I thought I would never live up to. It’s shameful, I know, but I just couldn’t shake it! I hated feeling that way and it was taking the joy out of blogging and creating away from me. So after seeking advice, I decided to take some time off to get myself together and figure out if this is something that truly makes me happy. And you know what? I missed it. I missed the creative outlet it gives me and the community that it can provide. I just needed to take a step back and figure out what I wanted my focus to be and why I was doing it.

So here I am, basically starting over. The primary focus will still be on personal style, because that’s what I love and what allows me to express myself creatively, but I want it to be about more than that. I’ve come a long way and learned a lot in the last five months, but I still have a long way to go. I don’t have it all figured out yet, I just know that I want this to be a safe space to talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. A space to talk about successes and struggles, a place where I can be my true self and be honest when I don’t have it all together. I hope you will be a part of that too. I hope we can create a community to share, support and celebrate each other. And most importantly, love each other in spite of our brokenness.

Truly,

Tamara

Florals were everywhere this past summer and I’m so happy to see the trend continue through the autumn and winter. Not that I wouldn’t just wear them anyway even if they weren’t “in-style”, but the fact that they are still so on trend just means that they are very easy to find and that makes me happy. I’m really loving the deeper hues we are seeing in the autumn florals, they just feel so warm and rich. Perfect for the cold weather we have been having in Michigan. I fell in love with this dress from Avenle the moment I saw it, so when they had a sale a few weeks ago I just had to snatch it up! It’s beautiful orange and black floral print is unlike anything I had seen before and has such a vintage feel. I’ve also been trying to branch out, away from my usual fit & flare style and to embrace my curves with more fitted silhouettes. Even though this dress is form fitting, it is made out of the softest full stretch knit and is so comfortable. After we took these pictures, I remembered that I have the cutest orange crocheted cape that I got from a local boutique last year and it is so perfect for this dress. I’m bummed that I didn’t wear it for these photos, but I guess that means I’ll just have to re-style it for another blog post.

I don’t know what has gotten into me, but I have been in major nesting mode lately! I have had an incredible urge to cook, clean, and rearrange the house, which is so not like me. I guess it must be the colder weather and the fact that winter is coming. I think that I am so scarred from last year’s horrible winter that I am subconsciously preparing to hibernate by making the house feel and smell as cozy as possible. Has anyone else been feeling this way? I would love to know I’m not alone with this crazy behavior. I’m like a frantic squirrel storing away nuts for the winter ;).

Truly,

Tamara
