“There’s no place like home”…. When I came up with the title of this blog post, it had everything to do with the outfit and these adorable shoes that look exactly like Dorothy’s ruby slippers, but the more I thought about this iconic movie quote, the more I realized how much it rings true in my own life. We were just talking to some family friends the other day and one of my best friends mom was remembering how I never wanted to spend the night at their house, but I always wanted my friend to spend the night at my house. I laughed, but had to admit that not much has changed. I have always been a huge homebody and even when I was a teenager and all of my friends were going out on the weekends, nothing ever sounded better to me than staying at home curled up on the couch watching a movie. There were a few years in my early 20’s when I went out all the time, but that quickly fizzled out. I’m an odd mix of loving to be alone, yet I’m really good with people and can easily strike up a conversation with a stranger. My jobs have always been in customer service and have involved talking to people, whether on the phone or in person, most of the day. It really takes a lot out me though, because when I get home from work I am completely drained of energy even though I sit for most of the day. I heard someone say recently that being an introvert vs. an extrovert means that you draw energy by having alone time vs. drawing energy from being with others. It really has nothing to do with being shy or outgoing. I consider myself to be an outgoing person, but I definitely draw my energy from having alone time. I really, really love to be alone and I honestly never get bored. But if my husband is home for more than a day with nothing to do, he starts to go stir crazy and I just think it’s the weirdest thing ever. I can always think of something to do at home. I think that this is why I’ve always had such a small group of really close friends and have never been the girl with a large circle of friends, I just don’t have the energy or need for it. I am recharged by alone time or a one on one conversation with someone I really care about. It’s funny because now that I really think about it, I guess that’s why I’m so drawn to blogging. Blogging is very solitary most of the time and that’s one of the things that I love about it. I can style an outfit, edit pictures, and write a blog post alone in my house for hours and be as happy as a clam! There really is no place like home. :)

Tamara

It was only two weeks ago that I was gushing about one of my favorite brands, Fleet Collection, and then I got the saddest news delivered to my email inbox last Friday! Fleet Collection is going out of business!! What?!! I was so sad and wish I had known about them sooner. Even though they have been in business for the last four years, I have only known about them for a short time. I had plans to order many more pieces from them and just like that, they are gone. The blow was only slightly softened by the huge discount they are giving for their closing sale. They started to sell out of things very quickly and I’m so glad I got the email when I did, because I was able to snag three beautiful dresses. If you act quickly and check out their website there may still be a few things left. Owners Eileen Chai & Lisa Hsieh sent out a sweet thank you email to all of their customers explaining that they are closing Fleet Collection because they are both starting their own separate ventures. I am sad to see Fleet Collection close, but excited to see what they do next and wish them nothing but the best. I am especially excited for Eileen’s new clothing line, Apricity! It is still a vintage inspired line that looks a lot like everything I loved about Fleet Collection. I actually got my first Apricity dress in the mail today and let me tell you, IT’S AMAZING!! It is so beautifully made and fits like a glove. I am so excited to take photos in it this weekend to share with you all! I seriously love it so much and I highly encourage you to check out Apricity. So I guess it’s not all sad news….when one vintage inspired clothing shop closes, another one opens. ;) Goodbye, Fleet Collection, you will be greatly missed.

Tamara

There was a time in my life when I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing pink. When I was young I didn’t want anything to do with wearing girly colors, let alone wearing pink lace! My sister was always the super girly one who’s absolute favorite color is pink. My poor mom always wanted me to take ballet lessons, but I wanted nothing to do with it. The thought of jumping around in a pink leotard and tutu horrified me! All I ever wanted to do was ride horses and hang out at the barn where I took lessons. I had no problem cleaning out a horses stall, but no way was I going to go hang out with all of those girly girls standing on their toes. I never thought it at the time, but I guess I was somewhat of a tom boy…… My how the tables have turned! I’ve always loved fashion and the process of styling the perfect outfit, but my taste and style has drastically changed. I hate to admit it even now, but I guess I’ve become a girly girl. My closet is full of dresses and skirts in every color and texture you can think of. I can’t seem to get enough! It is still so crazy to me how much I’ve changed and continue to change as an adult. One thing I’ve learned though, is never say never. And you know what??? I wish I had taken those ballet lessons. Sorry, Mom!!

The weather in Michigan was absolutely gorgeous this past weekend! It was so nice to be outside and not have to wear a coat. I almost forgot what the warmth of the sun felt like after the brutal winter we had. As you can tell from these pictures, it was a bit windy (which doesn’t make for the best hair day), but I wasn’t complaining (not too much anyway, lol). Now if we could just get some leaves on the trees………..

Today I thought I would share some of what I have been up to and what I have learned during this past five months. Even though I wasn’t blogging I was still always thinking about it and trying to learn how to be better at it. That’s one of the reasons I knew it was something I was meant to be doing. One of the ways I knew that I needed to improve was with the photography on the blog. When I first started this blog last summer, I didn’t have a camera so I was using my iPhone for all of the photos and editing them in various apps. While there is nothing wrong with this, and I’m proud of myself for making the best of what I had, I still knew there was a lot of room for improvement. So this past Christmas I asked for a DSLR camera and was so excited when I got it……but I had no clue how to use it. I ended up investing a little time and money in a few online courses and boy am I glad I did! I learned so much. The internet is such an awesome tool and I am still so amazed at all the things that you can learn online. It’s almost like the need for schooling in some areas is becoming obsolete (ok, so maybe you can’t become a doctor online, but you get what I’m saying). Anyway, after doing some research, I ended up taking a DSLR Basics and a Photoshop For Bloggers course through one of my favorite blogs A Beautiful Mess. You can also take both courses together at a discounted rate. I had already taken their Blog Life course and loved it, so I knew these two courses would be great and I was not disappointed. I learned so much from these courses and if you are also new to the world of photography and DSLR cameras I highly recommend them! These girls have been writing a blog and producing beautiful photos and content for years, so I knew they would have a lot to teach. I especially love that their courses are geared toward bloggers and that you have access to them for life. Also, if you ever have any questions you can ask in the Q&A section that you have access to and they usually answer within a few days. These courses are very thorough, well taught, and most importantly easy to understand. I cannot say enough good things about them! I still have a lot to learn, but I feel like I’ve come a long way. One of the most pleasant surprises that has come out of all of this is that I have really developed a love for photography and cannot wait to learn more.

Since I decided to write about my photography journey I thought it was only fitting to style an outfit around this adorable camera necklace that I got from Jane.com! Isn’t it the cutest?! Much to my husbands dismay, I have been obsessed with Jane ever since a friend introduced me to it about a month ago. They sell so many cute things from various sellers at really great prices. Some of it is a little cheesy, but I have found some super cute things, especially jewelry. You just have to check it out daily, because the deals change everyday (you can see how this might cause a problem, lol). I styled it with this baby blue Dear Creatures dress that I had been in love with since last fall. I finally ordered it from Ruche when it was on sale and I love it just as much as I thought I would. I absolutely adore the pale blue color and the 60’s vibe it gives off! And can we talk about these Seychelles shoes that I recently ordered from Hello Holiday?! They are perfect in every way! In the past I have talked about how I really don’t wear heels because of my klutziness, but these are the exception. They are so beautifully made, comfortable, and easy to walk in. They also have that vintage look that I love so much! You are going to be sick of seeing me wear them so often! ;)

It is 73 degrees here in Michigan today and I could not be happier about it! Happy Friday and I hope you have a great weekend!!

Truly,

Tamara

Ok, so I’m not going back to school and thank goodness for that! Lets just say that I didn’t exactly love school and I still sometimes have nightmares that it’s the end of the semester and I still don’t have any of my assignments done. The one thing I do miss though, is the back to school shopping. I have very fond memories of going shopping at Hudson’s with my mom, it’s the one thing that made the idea of going back to school bearable for me. I remember planning the outfit that I would wear on the first day of school like it was the most important thing in the world. I’m so thankful that I have a mom who let me be myself and wear pretty much whatever I wanted as long as it was within the dress code of my private school (which could sometimes be a bit limiting to a budding fashionista). Even though I’m an adult now and my school days are long gone, I think I should still be able to go “back to school” shopping around this time of year. Just as it eased the pain of the looming school year for me, new sweaters and boots will ease the pain of the impending winter ;).

It seemed appropriate to wear this jumper from ModCloth on the day that most kids go back to school. It reminds me of a school uniform in the very best way and I love it. I paired it with these Bass saddle shoes I scored from an eBay auction to give it even more of a preppy schoolgirl look. Now I just need to get a chic leather backpack and I’ll be ready to hit the books. Only this time, I get to choose what to read! ;).

Truly,

Tamara

Wednesday’s Love List 9-3-14

After taking Monday off and enjoying the long weekend, I’m back with Wednesday’s Love List :). It comes as no surprise that most of the items in this weeks list are dresses, because well, that’s what I love. I usually try to come up with a variety of pieces, but at the end of the day this weekly feature is about what I’m currently loving and I have to stay true to that. Maybe I should just change the title to Wednesday’s dresses and Peter Pan collars! ;)

1-Desktop9

1. I love the square neckline and ruched sleeves on this dress from Ruche.

2. The oversized Peter Pan collar gives this skirt and top set, from Emerging Thoughts, a major 60s vibe.

1-Desktop10

3. I saw this dress on Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky and was immediately obsessed. How cute is this print?!

4. I’m in love with this gingham dress from Old Navy, so much so that I might have already ordered it ;). This black and red gingham print reminds me of a pair of pants I had from Gap in the 90s.

5. These shoes from Bait Footwear remind me so much of Dorothy’s ruby slippers. They also come in a beautiful cobalt blue color. I think I need both ;).

I hope you all had a lovely Labor Day weekend. It’s time to officially bring on the fall!

Truly,

Tamara

My sister and I are super close, but we could not be more different people. In truth, she’s the better sister. She is a very patient and tolerant person, with one of the kindest souls I’ve ever known. I, on the other hand, am the sister with the fiery personality (no wonder my favorite color is red) and a stubborn streak. On top of our personality differences, our styles could not be more different. She leans toward more simple and classic pieces, while I have always loved trends and taking more risks. As I’m getting older I am definitely developing a taste for more classic pieces, but I think I will always have a little bit of a risk taker in me. As a child and a teenager, I loved looking different than everybody else in school and was never bothered that I didn’t quite fit in style wise. I think that is something that will always be a part of me. If I like it, I wear it.

I was on the phone with my sister the other night and sent her one of these pictures to see what she thought of my outfit, and guess what? She didn’t like it! She kept calling this crochet bow a “red puffy bow”, which of course infuriated me. Also, she didn’t like that the reds were not exactly the same shade (I am not always a matchy matchy kind of girl). This really threw her for a loop! When I got off the phone with her I started to have a ton of self doubt about posting this outfit, which is very unusual for me. The one thing I always have been confident in is my sense of style, so why was I letting this get to me (pms and lack of sleep was not helping)? This blog is meant to be a place to share MY personal style. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll look back and wonder why in the world I wore this “red puffy bow” and that’s ok, because at least I was being true to who I was at the time.

I say all of this, not to bash my sister (we all have opinions), but to show how different we all are. I encourage you to stay true to yourself no matter what others opinions might be. Even I slip up and doubt my sense of style once in a while, but I usually come around and stay true to myself. I love this fun, casual and kind of cutesy look. So here it is, sister! Me and my “red puffy bow”! :)

Truly,

Tamara

Wednesday’s Love List 8-13-14

As much as I hate to admit it, fall will be here soon. I actually love the fall, It’s just that I’m never ready for the summer to end. I do however, love the smell of crisp leaves, pumpkin spice lattes (pumpkin everything), Halloween and especially the clothes. I’m excited to start layering again with cozy sweaters, scarves, tights and boots. So for this weeks Wednesday’s Love List I thought I would share some pieces I’m currently loving that will easily transition from summer to fall.

1-Desktop2

1. Forever 21 has a lot of cute dresses right now and I especially love this one. I mean, it’s plaid AND has a Peter Pan collar. Enough said.

2. I love everything from Bait Footwear, but this pair of shoes would be perfect for any season and would go with everything.

Once it starts to get a little chilly out just add a cardigan and bright pair of tights and you have a perfect fall (or even winter) outfit!

1-Desktop3

3. I am loving this pretty, feminine sweater from Avenle. It works perfectly for cooler summer evenings or layered for the fall.

4. These super versatile boots from Target look just like Frye boots and are a great price for real leather. They also come in 2 other colors.

Just add some skinny jeans, a scarf and a jacket and you have an outfit ready for cooler weather.

1-Desktop4

5. I am absolutely in love with this dress from Ruche! I told you I was mad about plaid ;).

6. I adore Seychelles shoes and although this pair from Modcloth is a little pricey for me, I know that I would wear them for years to come.

Layer the dress with a cardigan or a jean jacket and you have a lovely fall ensemble :).

What about you? What are some great pieces that you either have in your closet or want to buy that help you transition from summer to fall? I hope you are having a great week so far!

Truly,

Tamara
